WHY EUSTRESSIN'?: ALEXIS DAVIS
You are only as strong as your team. I am grateful to have The Content Plug on speed dial. I promise I know more than UNC Alum, but Alexis is the homie and she's a Tar Heel. Not only is she making moves as a social media manager during the day, but she has also turned her passion into a hustle as an entrepreneur. Some people think social media is easy. I was excited to chop it up with Alexis to dispel this myth.
HEY ALEXIS, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?
I'm currently a social media manager and I've been working in the marketing/social media world for five years.
DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?
I think about my mental health often. It's easy to get overwhelmed by meetings/events, requests, notifications, and that constant urge to respond to emails and mentions as soon as you receive them. The idea of making colleagues, customers or clients happy instantly can take a toll on me mentally.
WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?
Being in situations where others may question your knowledge or authority are never fun, but it happens on occasion. With social media changing so often, it's important to be on top of updates and new trends. There's a constant pressure to know the answer to every question even if you've never experienced the situation.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?
I came to this realization last summer when I was in a job that was completely depressing. I wasn't happy in the role due to poor management and general company disarray. I put a lot of pressure on myself to perform well because I was a leader, but I didn't realize what the constant stress was doing to my body. It was then that I had to realize my job wasn't worth my mental and physical health. Thankfully, I was able to leave the position quickly and transition to a much healthier work environment.
HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?
When you're not mentally healthy, you're not able to focus on your role or complete it strategically. I need to be in a good headspace in order to successfully work with my colleagues and clients and produce quality work.
WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?
If I'm not taking a walk alone, I'll join a colleague on his or her daily walk. Calling my parents, friends or family often takes the stress away from whatever I'm dealing with. If I feel like I'm at a point where I can leave my work until later, a good nap always comes in handy!
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?
Knowing how to say no will get you far. The worst thing you can do is continue to say yes to requests and not get them done in a timely or quality manner. Putting off projects until you're ready to give your 100% is vital.
ANY OTHER INFORMATION YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU AND WHAT YOU'RE UP TO?
Being a social media manager is much harder than most imagine! It takes time to plan content/campaigns, engage with others, analyze the results and then determine how to move forward. It can be stressful at times, but telling the stories behind brands is something I absolutely love!
I have a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline, and I can't wait to show everyone what I'm up to next.
