WHY EUSTRESSIN'?: MISA HYLTON

Misa Hylton is a mother, lifestyle architect, fashion designer, and most importantly, a person. Throughout the years she has become more in tune with herself and understands how taking care of herself allows how to use her gifts to serve others. This week I had the pleasure to learn how she incorporates Eustress into her life. Check it out!

HEY MISA, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?

I am a fashion stylist designer and image consultant for 27 years. I founded the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy In 2012. I have also been a certified life coach for 4 years.

DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?

Yes, everyday.

WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?

I’m not sure if this is a unique challenge, I feel a huge responsibility and some times pressure (self imposed) around performance. Not as much in my styling career but in my teaching and coaching. I understand that God is working through me, therefore my responsibility is great.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN TAKING ON DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES?

I have been self-aware for some time now. I remember becoming self-aware initially around 2004. There is always another level to self-awareness. As long as we are alive, there is always a deeper level of learning to be explored.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?

I manage my stressors through self care, prayer and focus.

HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?

It helps me to maintain focus and centeredness. I am able to see possibility in the midst of situations that may create stress

WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?

Good stress looks like the positive challenges that come with creating a balanced home life and being a mother of adult children.

At work good stress looks like the obstacles and challenges that birth new ways to solve issues or allows the unfolding of something new that becomes a tool and a navigation for success.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?

I would tell them that you have to practice self care and know when it’s time to take that moment to breath and talk to God. Self care and connection to Source is ultimately the way that you get through all things.
